High Street, circa 1900
There wasn't much on High Street when this photograph was taken about 1900. This Ventura County town, 50 miles
northwest of downtown Los Angeles, had its start in 1900, the
year that Robert Poindexter mapped out the village and submitted a request for a post office. Throughout Southern
California, towns were springing up in anticipation of the railroad coming through, and Moorpark was no exception.
The railroad was completed in 1904, and was as important to the development and life of the town at that time as
the freeway would be a century later. The goal of the Moorpark Historical Society is to keep Moorpark's past alive.
We do that through several ways, including a fascinating book, "The Moorpark Story," filled with anecdotes about
life in the town from the 1880s to 1969; with a living history program with "Mabel Bradley," the real-life telephone
operator in Moorpark during the early 1900s; and with a Walking Tour brochure of the downtown area. Please look
over our pages and our history.
